Well not all of Kansas, but the Westboro Baptist Church (the guys who made themselves a target with their notorious ‘God Hates Gays’ signs) is up to their old – naive – tricks again. If you were planning on a fun trip to Comic-Con next week, you’ll have to get through their picket line first. Because God is now on a rampage against comic book nerds, apparently.
That’s right, the Westboro church plans on protesting Comic-Con and the ‘idolatrous worship’ that takes place there (the sign isn’t real but thank Nerd Bastards for it). Reverend Fred Phelps plans to take a group from the congregation to protest the big convention. If you actually want to meet up with them, they’ll make their grand entrance on July 22nd from 1:15 – 2:00pm (so plan your schedule accordingly.) So what do these hearty church goers have against Comic-Con? Maybe this statement (from Topless Robot) given by the Church’s minister will help clear things up:
“Are you kidding?! If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here. They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent – so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry.”

Honestly, I would depend more on Superman than this goober to save me from Hell. Believe me, I’m no choir boy, but I’m a pretty devout Christian and my father was a minister. I’ve read the Bible several times, and have not once been able to associate it’s text with geekiness.
You know it’s just so hard to read and enjoy something without having to worship it, right? At my house it’s common knowledge that ‘thou shall not take George Lucas’ name in vain’. While men dressed up as Sailor Moon does tend to push things, even then I wouldn’t exactly categorize this as being evil (and there is sure to be worse at this year’s event).

If you happen to come across these misguided zealots on your way to the convention, resist the temptation to punch them in the face. Don’t forget Mark 12:31: “Love thy neighbor as thyself. There is no commandment greater than this”.
To keep appraised of more of their stupidity, be sure to check out their schedule of events where plenty of funerals for soldiers are in the line-up for protests. Just never forget, that every comic book or game you buy, contributes to the Apocalypse….yeah.

Ok I’ll still punch em in the face, since If I was doing the protest I would punch myself in the face.
Phelps et al never fail to bring the crazy. Gotta give them that.
Also, it might be worth mentioning that the Superman story (in many of its forms) has a whole lot of very direct, very intentional parallels to the story of Jesus: http://www.unomaha.edu/jrf/superman.htm
So, um, God Hates Allegories?
Bahahaha! The Ambiguously Gay Dueo. Awesome cosplay.
Always hated retards like this.
I don’t hate Jesus, it’s His followers I despise. At least, the crazy ones.
I was reminded of this for some reason.

People like this piss me off ._.
They’re the ones who ruin all the fun by pissing everyone off. I hope all of them get killed in a sick way.
Lol. Anyone who takes this church seriously really should go to hell.
lol thats awfully Christian of the guy in the first pic to do.
Let’s not even bring the church into this. These people are just plain crazy. It wouldn’t matter what religion these people believed in they would still have some screws loose.
The Westboro baptist church people are awful. I know about them because I’ve seen news stories about them protesting outside the funerals of fallen US soldiers with signs diminishing the soldiers. If I had more time and money I would do everything I could to make their lives a living hell.
Westboro church makes me sick, the way they treat a fallen soldiers of this country is disturbing. They fight for us every day, and they have to protest that man/woman’s life based upon sexual preference. They just need to mind there own business, and quit meddling in others.
