It’s amazing how quickly an online gaming match can turn the most avid and go lucky of gamers, into a seething mass of anger. However much a game may rock and receive high praises from the critics there are still variables associated with the game that might turn many players off. I’m referring to our gaming peers. More often than anyone would like, we encounter players online that absolutely ruin your gaming session and as a result many players refuse to go online and play their favorite titles. I personally know several people who refuse to have their gaming experience ruined by some jerk online. If you are an online gamer, I guarantee that you have run into one of these issues at one time or another.

Happens all the time
Lack of teamwork skills
If you had a chance to play a shooter online recently then there is no doubt that you have encountered players with no team work skills. In online multiplayer games like Modern Warfare you’re likely to encounter other players that have no care for you or your squad. Either because they lack interest in the match or just refuse to be a part of the team’s efforts. These players are often times running around blindly getting killed and bringing your team’s total score down. Even worse they often steal your kill or equipment right out under your nose while you’re on the offensive. These situations will more than likely result in your squad loosing the match. If you ever encounter this kind of player pray to the heavens that friendly fire is off because this guy will take your whole team down either on purpose or by accident. It’s unclear as to why some players decide to take these actions, perhaps they are new to the game or maybe they just want to be a prick at your expense.

Yeah get em kitty
Players who camp through the entire match
This one could be debatable but still annoying none the less. Many will agree that camping is a legitimate strategy while playing online. Fine, maybe it is, maybe it isn’t, that’s not the point. The point is that some players will camp an entire match picking off opponents that just respawned, now where’s the fun in that? In death matches an entire team will camp in a single position forcing your team to advance which actually has the potential for an intense battle. But if the camping team has the advantage of high ground, ammo, weapons and health while your team struggles uphill and has to hunt for equipment then the game is ruined. Even if you or your teammates manage to infiltrate the enemy’s position there is the likelihood that the campers have already infested their strong hold with explosives, giving you no chance to actually take anyone out. I will admit there is a plus side to campers. There is no greater feeling than creeping up behind a camper, who is still picking off your squad, and putting a bullet in his head without ever seeing you coming.

“Connection lost”
Players who quit because they suck
If you can’t taking a beating in a game, I wonder how you can survive the real world. This has to be my most hated issue about playing online, especially one on one matches. Being a huge Tekken and Street Fighter player I am constantly being denied my victory points because some guy on the other end couldn’t handle the beating. It’s really common to be on the final round of a victorious fight when a message pops up alerting you that connection to other player has been lost. Translation, guy on the losing side just quit, I could have leveled up with that win. This has happened to me hundreds of times and yes I’m aware that sometimes the connection is the problem. But I refuse to believe that only fighting games have poor connection. I rarely lose connection on other types of games. Which means that players are quitting right before the victory is sealed. I have noticed that players tend to quit when they are caught in the middle of a chain of throws from King in Tekken. Players lose hope quickly as they watch their character get slammed on the ground for the fourth time in the chain knowing there are at least two other maneuvers left in the combo.

This is an actual product
Players with diarrhea of the mouth
Players have really got to put an end to this and I’m especially looking at all you younglings. No one wants to go into a game with nothing but hate and trash being thrown left and right towards each other. Most gamers probably don’t mind profanity, dropping an F-bomb because the guy across the map nailed you with a throwing star is probably ok. Being a thirteen-year-old telling others that you F-ed their grandmother so hard she went flying throw a window is not. Online gaming is not the place to share your hate; no one signed on to hear your hateful opinions of black, gays, women, Jews, dogs, midgets, vegans, clowns, or whatever so keep it to yourself. On top of the fact that you make yourself look like a tool you also run the risk of having your account suspended or worse. Many have just avoided playing with strangers online because of this and it’s easy to see why.

Stupid hacks
Players who cheat
It’s perfectly fine to take full advantage of knowledge you have gained from your surroundings. If you happen to know what car to hide behind that everyone else seems to forget about then go for it. Even exploiting glitches can be interesting to watch and perform, this isn’t much of a problem as hacks and mods are simply because the developers can add patches to correct this. But purposely altering the game to your advantage usually results in the playing field being uneven. Hacking or modding your game with your buddies in campaign mode is fine, but when you begin to use these hacks and mods in a competitive situation then that’s a no no. It’s simple to understand why so many walk away from online multiplayer matches when they are constantly losing to cheaters. It does no one any good to be playing a game that abruptly ends because someone managed to go into god mode.
Playing online with others is a fun experience under the proper conditions. The solutions seem simple: boot these people or find a new match. You also have the option to report most of the offenders. However solving these issues is not so simple mostly because it seems that every match you enter is littered with people guilty of the above. Let’s be honest, we go online not to moderate and help clean up the gaming experience. That’s not our job. We just want to get our game on. Every so often you’ll be lucky enough to play with people that are actually good positive team players and it’s recommended that you friend those people for future plays. If you do, you’ll quickly see how working with a well coordinated team will almost always guarantee a victory over cheaters, trash talkers and campers.
Those are pretty much the reasons why I rarely play fighters online or wear a headset.
And lack of teamwork bugs me especially when the plan is fool-proof and guaranteed to work.
How about playing with people on games that ask you to let them get kills so they can get certain achievements and trophies. Ive had this happen in matches on GOW. Pretty annoying. Set up matches with people that agree to it beforehand.
That’s why you don’t play CONSOLE games online. While you still have those issues on the PC, they aren’t nearly as common, and solving them is as easy as kicking the twit or playing on a server you know to be good.
Word! Lack of teamplay and irrelevant singing / scraching the mic and yelling about “****s” makes me sick. When will we get dedicated servers for consoles?
I NEVER wear a headset unless I’m playing with friends. I know not everyone is an asshole online, but I’d rather just avoid it altogether.
As for fighters…oh boy. The most recent fighter I’ve played is Dragon Ball: Raging Blast, and I had quite a few “disconnections” while playing that. I really don’t understand the satisfaction of leaving the game, because in most cases, it counts as a loss for you! I also hate how Ken basically became a mockery in SFIV because so many sore players left the match, and that makes me mad because I USE KEN, and am not like some of those people.
I dont wear a headset that much because I dont think it helps me much. I tend to do worst with it… I get distracted with trying to play and talk at the same time.
there’s no teamwork at all in any of the games i play that’s why i have to play with my friends so we can work together
you rage quitters run rampant in fight night round 4.i stopped playing online all together because of it.
This is why I only play one or two games online. Thankfully, the ones I do play haven’t seemed to go this route.
Theres also player that lags. one sec theyre in front of you the next theyre like mile away from you. That just makes it impossible to kill them.
Street Fighter IV online has all but the teamwork one. I’ll run into a ryu or ken who jumps back repeatedly until he’s in the corner, then he’ll crouch down and block and/or jump-back repeatedly in the corner the whole fight. In some cases he has set the game to 1 round 30 seconds and threw a couple fireballs early on to get some chip and is just waiting for the time to run out. I beat him or am about to beat him and he rage-quits on me. Afterwords he sends me an expletive filled message putting me down.
