We had a chance recently to do an exclusive interview with the developers of the indie sensation Trine. I loved the game, as you can tell from my review. With the game being released recently on PSN after a successful outing on the PC, we wanted to know what thoughts Frozenbyte had about bringing the game out on additional platforms, and sequel potential.
The following answers are from Lauri Hyvärinen, Designer and CEO of Frozenbyte.
With the positive reception you been having with the PC and PSN versions of the game, what are your plans on bringing the game to other gaming platforms like XBLA?
We have some plans for an XBLA version, but for the most part it's not for us to decide, so we really have to see what will happen. WiiWare and other platforms are probably not going to happen anytime soon.
What additional features would you consider for an XBLA version? Multiplayer seems to be a much asked feature.
Multiplayer is something that we are looking into for future games but it's a little bit complicated and I wouldn't count on it being made available for any version of the original Trine, to be perfectly honest.
There is always never enough time to make the ultimate game. What features were cut from the first game that you would like to see in a potential sequel?
Honestly, we sacrificed a lot of features from Trine to get it done! Online multiplayer is of course the most infamous of the sacked features (but that decision was made at the very beginning of the project in any case), and others include a proper save system and a lot of character features for example. We also cut a couple of levels quite near the end. Originally we also had a bit more enemy variety but at some point we had to tighten the enemy focus a bit. If we do a sequel for Trine we would be looking into making all of these properly - and much more, of course. There's a lot of ideas on the drawing board, so to speak... We would definitely look into console-specific controllers if certain versions would come up.
So what's life like up where you live? Not many people know you are based out of Helsinki! With a company name like Frozenbyte, I have an image in head that you work out of ice castles :)
Actually, we just got our first snow cover here in Helsinki with a few inches of snow and a lot of minor car accidents around the town. We have a real winter here but luckily it's not that cold or long, and it's become a little bit more mellow in later years, if you ask me. During summertime there aren't any dark nights at all. For game developers, though, it really doesn't matter, because we are indoors doing games round the clock anyway. :)

Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. Stay warm!
