Sonic Generations: How the game brought out the perfectionist in me

Nostalgia and video games seem to go hand in hand, don’t they? It seems like you can’t go a week without someone bringing back a “forgotten” classic from five years ago. Sonic Generations might be touting its 20 years worth of remixed levels as the ultimate tribute for the spiky hedgehog, but I’m drawn in for an entirely different reason – the never-ending quest for a perfect rank.

Hackers Swap Sonic Generations’ Classic and Modern Levels

Longtime Sonic fans are looking forward to Sonic Generations finally breaking the Sonic Cycle, showing how SEGA’s mascot has evolved. With carefully crafted levels specially designed for the two different generations of the hedgehog, everything is perfectly planned. That is, until hackers swapped the classic Sonic with the modern one, creating an entirely different play experience for an entirely different generation.

New Sonic Fan Film Dashing Our Way

Remember that Mega Man fan film from a few years back? If you’re like me, you watched the trailer but never bothered to watched the whole thing. Looks like you can’t keep director Eddie Lebron down, as he has moved his sights from the Blue Bomber to the Blue Blur, recruiting the one and only Sonic the Hedgehog for his next project.

If you’re anything like me, you tend to be wary about anything labeled “free.” And, much like that time I partook in Taco Bell’s complimentary “all-you-can-eat taco fiesta,” I’ve learned that anything offered gratis by Apple’s App Store is always a bad idea. Leave it up to SEGA to buck the trend by offering a brand new Sonic game to iPhone users – on the house.

Sonic Boom 2011

Fans of Sonic the Hedgehog in the United States have it rough compared to their UK counterparts. While they’re living it up on Sonic rollercoasters and the Summer of Sonic each year, we’re twiddling our thumbs and devouring the footage online. Thankfully, SEGA of America took notice and treated us Sonic fans well this year with Sonic Boom, the first US Sonic event, free of charge.

Project Outrun finally hits the streets: Part 3

Thought arcades were dead? You’re probably right, but at least one arcade cabinet is still very much alive and kicking ass on the streets. Since its infancy, The Kartel has been covering the story. Decades ago, in internet time, a small group of very dedicated UC Irvine students and instructors got together to build a real life Sega Outrun cabinet that is actually able to drive on the streets (probably not legally though).

Sonic’s “The Sound of Speed” is a blast from the past

The melodies of Sonic’s adventures have been ingrained into every gamers’ head for close to 20 years now. Sure, the sounds of the Green Hill Zone may have received everything from metal riffs to orchestrated melodies, but none have received as much collaborative effort as OCRemix’s latest album, “The Sound of Speed.”
